Co-establishment of Confucius Institute by CSU and DRC Foreign Affairs University

The 12th Confucius Institute Conference was held in Xi’an, on December 12. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the state council, President of the State Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarter, attended the conference and delivered a speech. The conference was themed “Working Together to Build a Community of Shared Future for Mankind through Cooperation and Innovation”, welcoming university presidents, and representatives of Confucius Institutes from over 140 countries and regions. Zhou Kechao, Vice President of CSU attended the conference on behalf the university.


Over the conference, Vice Premier Liu Yandong delivered a keynote speech and licensed the newly-established institutes, including the one co-built by CSU and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Foreign Affairs University. The licensing ceremony was attended by Professor Dede Birhonga Ndemba, President of DRC Foreign Affairs University.

Later on December 15, President Professor Dede Birhonga Ndemba was invited to visit CSU. Vice President Zhou Kechao met the delegation. Both sides showed their will to join hands in building the Confucius Institute, through which they will benefit cultural and academic exchange between the two countries and friendship as well. During the visit, the delegation visited the New Campus and Xiangya Medical School, followed by an academic exchange with the Department of French of the School of Foreign Languages.

It is reported that over the past 13 years since the establishment, especially over the latest 5 years, Confucius Institutes followed the principle of joint building and benefit sharing, conducing to promoting Chinese-foreign friendship and civilization exchange. By now, there are 525 Confucius Institutes and 1113 Confucius Classes in 146 countries and regions, involving 9.16 million participants in total. In the future, Confucius institutes will employ the link of language communication and the platform of mutual cultural learning to develop a friendship bridge among different countries and a propeller for win-win cooperation. With the optimization of distribution, Confucius Institutes will deepen the reform in teacher, textbook and teaching method to improve the education level, providing varied and localized service based on differed needs while enhancing the local teacher cultivation. At the same time, the mechanism will be improved to enhance joint efforts, building an inclusive, sharing, and harmonious humanities exchange brand for a community of shared future.
